Gender Identity

Basics

Before we discuss gender identity more, let’s get some basic terminology down.

Sex- Sex refers to a persons biology, based upon genitalia, chromosomes, hormones, etc. A person’s sex may be female, male, or intersex. Sex is increasingly being referred to and explained as how a person is assigned at birth on those bases.

Intersex- A person who is intersex MAY have ambiguous genitalia, mixed/extra chromosomes, and/or hormones, etc.

Gender/Gender Gender Identity- Gender/Gender Identity refers to how a person feels and identifies. This is not always the same as the sex that they are assigned

Gender Expression- Gender Expression refers to how a person outwardly express themselves. Gender expression is SEPARATE from gender identity, and thus may or may not coordinate with it.

Cisgender- A person whose gender identity matches or is in sync with their assigned sex.

Transgender- An umbrella term for people whose gender identity does not match their assigned sex.

AFAB- Assigned Female at Birth

AMAB– Assigned Male at Birth
